Picture of the Month

Matt Schaaf reunites with Gabriel, an alumni of the Taft High School Interact club from 2011. Gabriel recently graduated from UCLA and plans to attend medical school. The reunion happened by chance at the Rotary month-end social event at The Stand. Come on out to our next night out on November 28th - location to be announced. Why knows who you might meet? Plus, it's a night away from those Thanksgiving leftovers!

From the Desk of Dale...

Dear Rotary Club of Woodland Hills,
Another great month for our club.  So far this year, we have two new Rotary members. Welcome to Shelley Stark and Karen Simon.
Our Rotarian of the month for September was Bryna Hornstein.  Bryna is a diligent club secretary and a wonderful organizer of programs.  She truly knows how to get a job done.  Thank you, Bryna!
October 3, Brian Basura spoke to our club about his South Pacific Adventures and Projects. It was fascinating to hear about his adventures with his wife sailing half way around the world.  And, he is the cousin of our own Matt Schaff!
October 10th, Anna Sakvarelidze, our president elect, did a fabulous job of running the meeting in my absence.  I heard from so many how wonderful she was and how natural the role seemed to her.  Thanks, Anna! The speaker that day was Doug Baker. Does is a past district governor of our district, and now the District Foundation Chair.  Doug is so knowledgeable, humorous and entertaining. He really inspired members of our club with some great ideas for pursuing grants. Jeff Stern inducted Karen Simon and did a terrific job.
October 17thJeff Stern ran the meeting as I was still out of town.  Jeff is an ex president extraordinaire, so another job well done.  Thanks Jeff.  This was our Officer of the Quarter meeting.  We so appreciate our civilians as well as officers from the Topanga Division. Also present for a short presentation was Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel.  He presented an award to the Topanga Division Police as well.  Thank you, Assemblyman Gabriel.
October 23rdwe had a Fireside Chat at the home of Sheri Polak.  I always love being at this event.  The purpose is to allow new members to meet their board, hear about the history of Rotary, our club and our district.  They learn about all the projects being done by our club.  This gives them a chance to decide what they want to do in the Rotary world as part of our club.  This event is not limited to new members.  Long time members are also more than welcome to attend this fun evening. Its great also for us to get to learn more about our new members.
October 24th, Paulinda Schimmel from the Ovarian Cancer Circle shared her heart wrenching story.  She has devoted her life to raising funds for Ovarian Cancer research. The money raised is sent to Docter Sanaz Memarzadeh at UCLA, who has devoted her career and research to finding  a cure for ovarian cancer, as well as a solution for early detection.  Paulinda’s daughter, Robin, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at age 17 and lost her battle at age 20.  Paulinda is determined that there will be “no more Robin stories”.  This organization and its work is very near and dear to
my heart due to my own diagnosis of ovarian cancer in 2014.
Our Rotarian of the month for October is Kim Wall. Kim is an unsung hero who does so much behind the scenes to keep our club (and our finances) running smoothly. Thank you Kim, for all you do!
No dinner meeting this month due to Halloween.  We want to make sure that parents and grandparents are available to have fun with the kids and keep them all safe.
Great month.
Continue to be inspiration…..

Halloween Faire
A hit with kids and parents
Hundreds of local children and their parents had a festive Halloween time at the Halloween Family Faire, cosponsored by Rotary along with the city Dept. of Parks and Recreation and the Warner Center/West Valley Chamber of Commerce. Our club sponsored 4 games as fund raisers. Additional games were provided by Parks & Rec and bounce houses and more than 20 other booths provided additional fun.
