Can you believe it’s August already?
Here’s the rundown on our last 2 meetings and other recent events:
July 13th meeting
Rotarian of the day was Jim Domine, who is a Past 5260 District Governor. Ron Supancic received his Blue Badge! Congrats to Ron! We heard from Matt Schaaf about his plans as Vocational co-chair this year. Peace Committee chair Ron Supancic announced the monthly meetings that take place at Sheri Polak’s house the third Tuesday night of each month. All members are welcome! Club service co chairs Lynn Miller and Sandy Rosenholz have tons of fun things for us to do to get to know each other this year. What about the meeting program? Funny you should ask. I heard a very moving speaker at the President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) in February. As a Rotarian and polio survivor, Ramesh Ferris showed me what it’s like living with polio every day, the challenges he has overcome and the opportunities he was given when he was given up for adoption as an only child from his single mother in India. Popcorn and a movie was on my agenda. Well the popcorn worked! But the DVD player on the laptop apparently gathered dust and didn’t work! Hence, we need a new laptop for our speaker presentations! Any suggestions? (Okay, what I really mean is, does someone want to donate $500 so we can buy a new one?)
July 14th – We had two new members attend our Fireside Chat, aka new member orientation, prepared by Barry Verga and Paul Gross, our membership co-chairs. Beto Hale brought his wife, Sandra and Natalia Molero. Welcome to the Club!
July 20th meeting
Rotarian of the day was Dale Barnes. Dale is both Club Secretary and Program chair. Michael Turner spoke about his role as Public Relations co-chair with Alberto Solares. Our club desperately needs to be promoted on social media. It takes a group of about 5 members to cover all aspects. If you can help him, please let Michael know! Patti Jo Wolfson told us 2 truths and one lie. We had to figure out the lie. Most of us didn’t get it right! Jay Saltzman spoke about our club’s October 29th first time ever Halloween Family Faire! Elizabeth Tilkian and Alice Muntean, our Community co-chairs, combined efforts and provided our members with the opportunity to prepare a meal for about 100 homeless. We formed an assembly line and the paper sacks were stuffed very efficiently!
July 24th – Abba Tribute Band
We had a pretty good turnout from our members and their families. Several members of Kiwanis and a couple from Lions Club joined us as well. Everyone brought picnic dinners and stayed through the last song, which was Dancing Queen.
July 26th Music Night
Organized by Neal Goldman with a prepared play list of jazz and light rock and played on his outstanding sound system. If you’ve never been, sign up next time for a relaxing evening.
July 27th – Our first Wednesday Night Live – evening meeting
We had our meeting at the Pizza Cookery in Woodland Hills. About 45 people attended so we are off to a good start! Michelle Goldwater and Lois Koch won the Coffee Bean gift cards as they matched the most baby pictures to our members. Sheri Polak, Jeff Stern and Tom Ludowitz shared their experiences taking the fire truck down to the Ciudad Obregon, Mexico Rotary Club in the 1990s. We will have some information about the member survey we took before dinner. Our August 31 Wednesday Night Meeting may be at Sagebrush Cantina. Details to follow soon!

August 2nd – Board meeting
All members welcome! 6 – 7:30 at Sheri Polak’s house. Here’s an opportunity to jump in and get involved!
August 3rd – Lunch meeting at the Country Club
New member induction, Michelle Goldwater! We will honor our Officers of the Quarter from the Topanga LAPD station. Also, LAPD will instruct us how to react in a live shooter situation. Unfortunately, we all need to know how to handle this if it occurs.
August 10th – Lunch meeting at Country Club
Rhonda Mayer of Community Training Connect focuses on training with an emphasis on improving human performance effectively, efficiently, enjoyable and ethically.
August 13th – Cowboy Cookout
At Paul and Dale Gross’ house. Starts at 6:00. Bring your own grill-able food. The rest is provided. Fee per person is $15. See Sandy Rosenholz or Lynn Miller for more details. This fun events usually draws about 50 people. Let’s make it 70 this year!
Silent auction items please!
To raise additional funds for the club, I’d like to have a monthly silent auction and need your donated items. My preference would be baseball, basketball, hockey game, and concert tickets, restaurant gift cards, and items smaller than a bread basket! (especially if I have to carry them around!) Thanks ahead of time for your donations!

Did you volunteer to have your house Tee-pee’d at the Demotion Dinner? Let me know and that can be arranged! Fee to remove is $40. Photos of your house will appear in this newsletter and our website! It’s another way to raise money for the club and we can have some fun at the same time.
At the Demotion dinner, I asked everyone to spend 10 minutes a day on Rotary. You can talk to a neighbor, a co-worker or a friend about Rotary. How about your doctor or dentist? Dry cleaner? Vet? Invite them to a meeting or an event. You can think about an easy club fundraiser, or a great meeting speaker. Just 10 minutes a day. That’s all I ask!
