Picture of the Month

Pacific Lodge residents model the care packs they assembled to aid homeless women. Rotarians Dale Barnes, Eva Hainer, Elizabeth Tilkian, Pami Kaur and Sheri Polak helped out. Scroll down for more pictures.

From the Desk of Dale...

Dear Rotary Club of Woodland Hills,
We are moving forward with a fun and productive Rotary year.

We had a wonderful Officer of the Quarter meeting.  We had a full house, and as always, we were honored to have the opportunity to honor such great men and women who do so much for our community.  I also want to give a big shout out to Sandy Rosenholz for providing the wonderful Nothing Bundt Cake cupcakes to our honorees. Sandy, your generosity and thoughtfulness is appreciated by all.

We have had some losses in the past couple of weeks.  Our deepest condolences go to Jill Mellman and her family for the loss of Jill’s mother, Sally.  I didn’t know Sally, but from all the wonderful things I have heard, I wish I had.

Our own Bernie Otis passed over Labor Day weekend.  His family was at his side.  Bernie was a warm, caring man with a great sense of humor.  He was an author and lecturer and led a very full life.  We will miss him a lot.

The District Picnic in Redondo Beach was a lot of fun.  Fabulous food (and a lot of it!) great fellowship and a terrific boat race.  We didn’t win, but maybe next year, Steve? Matt, thanks for making our boat sturdy, and Steve, thanks for being our “jockey”!!!!

On August 8thwe had a very upbeat meeting with District Governor Joe Vasquez.  It was a pleasure hosting Joe, his aide, Nora, and our ADG, Sally Goya.  On August 15thwe had a fabulous speaker from the district, Kathleen Terry. Kathleen is the district Membership Chair.  She is dynamic and engaging and really got us all to think about ways we can grow our membership.

The last Wednesday of August we had a great social gathering at the Sagebrush Cantina.  It was a really fun time for all.  Thank you Connie, for making the arrangements.

September will be another productive month for us.  We will be inducting a couple of new members.  Many of us will be attending the Peace in the South Bay gathering which developed as a springboard from our Clergy Dialogue.

Let’s BE THE INSPIRATION
Yours in Rotary Service,
Dale

My Rotary moment was several years ago when Lois Koch was president and I was a guest. She conducted the meeting with such ease and confidence. I wanted to be in her presence. I also was impressed with all of the wonderful things the Woodland Hills Rotary does!! I joined right after that meeting. I love my Rotary friends and all of the things we do!!!!

Congratulations to Gwyn Petrick!

Gwyn Petrick, a long-time Rotarian who spearheaded the Rotocare project, is being honored October 6 by the Fernando Award Foundation. She will receive a 2018 Impact Award at the 60th Annual Fernando Award Dinner. Gwyn was selected for her contributions to the San Fernando Valley community through her work in Rotary and other organizations. Congratulations!

Empowering Women in India

Aparna Rajawat, a motivational speaker who empowers youth and women was the club’s June 6 speaker. She has been an international player in martial arts and choreographed numerous dance shows. When Aparna began working as a tour manager she conducted research on the social systems, religious beliefs, culture, marriage system, and other aspects the countries in which Aparna led tours. “This led me to open my mind and start seeing the condition of women in India, where in many ways they are not seen equally,” said Aparna. “After interacting with people from around the world, I have changed my views about the existence and importance of women.” One of her goals is to empower women in Aparna's native India. “I have in-depth knowledge about their life and the suffering, exploitation and sacrifices of women in my country. I have always had a desperate urge to do something for them and I must say this dream and dedication is not letting me sleep.”

Adieu
This is my final issue of the Rotopinion, which I have been editing for more than five years. In addition, I have assisted with promoting many of the club's projects. I will miss working with Woodland Hills Rotarians, many of whom I have known for 17 years. I am now transferring my membership to the Summerlin, NV Rotary Club, which was designated the Best Small Club in their District in 2017.

Adieu,

Michael S. Turner, M.S.
