Long time member Marlowe Mogul and his wife, Gloria, have left a legacy of music and education to the Community with the Andrea Mogul Memorial Scholarships. Andrea Mogul was their only child and she started playing the piano as a child in 1969. She became an accomplished pianist who won many awards. Andrea had a determination to learn the technical complexities of her repertoire choices which would make a professional pianist shudder with fear. Click on Read More for the rest of the storyIn junior high school, Andrea performed as a choral and instrumental accompanist, and participated in semi-monthly “master classes” (informal teaching recitals) with some of the advanced piano students. She elicited the respect of the group for consistently being one of the best prepared. The class was conducted as a forum for students to help each other with difficulties they were experiencing with their piano pieces. Andrea continued performing through high school.
At 22, Andrea was driving near her home in Woodland Hills and was hit and killed by a drunk driver; a young woman who had been celebrating her high school graduation. Andrea’s devastated parents chose to turn a tragedy into an opportunity to recognize outstanding students from Andrea’s alma mater, Taft High School. Through the Rotary Foundation, they established the Andrea Mogul Memorial Scholarship Awards, which are given each year to an outstanding student and an outstanding music student.
The Outstanding Student Scholarship recipient is an exceptional individual whose unwavering dedication and commitment to academic excellence has set her apart as a shining example of what it means to be an outstanding student. The recipient has fearlessly tackled rigorous course load, embraced challenges, and strived for greatness in every aspect of her academic pursuits. The Outstanding Musician Scholarship recipient is an extraordinary individual who has not only demonstrated commitment to her musical craft but has also exemplified a remarkable dedication to academic excellence. Throughout his high school journey, he has been a member of the marching band and showcased exceptional leadership skills.
