We’re falling into September, but it still very much feels like summer! What a great month we had in August. Here’s a little recap of what we accomplished—and a look at what’s ahead.
We have established several monthly service projects. Once a month, we have our San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission cooking night, which has been a huge success for many years. Now, our Community Service Committee has also started monthly food-prep nights at Hope the Mission. We also continue to enjoy our bi-monthly bingo night at the Jewish Home for the Aging.
Some of our member learned about another wonderful organization we can support when we toured the Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC) in August. TLC is an incredible resource for individuals who are blind or have disabilities in our community. We’re excited about the opportunity to get involved and volunteer there.
We kicked off our monthly evening meetings with our first gathering at Maria’s Italian Kitchen, with 14 members and two guests, Tommy and Elvis. It was a great opportunity to connect, enjoy some good food, and spend time together outside of our regular lunch meetings.
We had three fantastic District events in August!
Seven of our members attended the Dodger game with a group of Rotarians from across the District. The game didn’t go our way that day, but we had a fabulous time cheering on our Boys in Blue!
At the first District Breakfast of this Rotary year, our club had a table of eight, and more than 300 Rotarians were in attendance. What a great morning! We enjoyed hearing from keynote speaker Phil Keoghan and connecting with fellow Rotarians from throughout the District.
Rounding out August was the annual District Picnic on Saturday, August 29, where we proudly showed off our new and improved cardboard boat! A huge thank-you to Fidel Martinez for building our brand-new boat, Anna’s daughter Emma for creating the design, and everyone who helped paint it. It truly was a team effort!
On August 26, we welcomed Jay and Ferne Saltzman and Jeff Stern—in person!—to our lunch meeting. At that meeting, we also inducted Steven Prakash back into our Woodland Hills Rotary Club. We’re so happy to have Steven back and can’t wait to see him get involved again!
September is Basic Education and Literacy Month, a time to focus on strengthening communities’ ability to support education and literacy for people of all ages, reducing gender disparities in education, and increasing adult literacy.
Rotarians around the world work on projects that support these goals by empowering educators, providing educational resources, and offering literacy programs. Dolly Parton is an amazing example of Service Above Self. Through her Imagination Library, she has helped provide millions of books to children around the world, helping give young readers the opportunity to develop a lifelong love of reading.
I can’t wait to see what September holds! We have so many opportunities to serve, connect, and have fun together.

Rotarian Ferne Saltzman and President Bryna Hornstein presented a $10,000 checck to CEO Kay Buck of Cast LA, which is part of the largest national non-profit for survivors of human trafficking. District Service Co-chair, Christy Pinto, also presented to Kay 35 gift cards from D5280 clubs, which were donated at the August 15 District Breakfast.
