Happy October everyone. Fall is here and it’s pumpkin season and spooky season as well! We had a great month of September with some exciting meetings and activities.
Our 2 regular monthly projects were full . . .cooking at the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission and food prep at Hope the Mission. A small group of us who participated in these two events had fun and got it done. If you haven’t yet participated in one of these 2 monthly events, please try to join us and you will feel so fulfilled afterwards.
We also had our pool party graciously hosted at the home of Karen and Howard Schnee. We had so much with great company and great food. Thank you to Mona and Fernando for putting it together and thank you to everyone who contributed and those who came to enjoy the day.
We had four great meetings this month. Our first zoom meeting of the month featured Rotarian Peter Lattey of the Redondo Beach club talking about a water project in Africa that our club has participated in. Our second zoom meeting was Rotarian Jonny Jenks of the Granada Hills club speaking about a global grant in India. It’s great to hear what other clubs are doing that our club can get involved in and show our support.
We had 2 big in person meetings this month. On September 9th we honored the officers of the quarter and the year from the Topanga Station. These awards mean so much to the officers being honored for their accomplishments and to their families. At that meeting, we also honored the 25th anniversary of 9-11. So many men and women in uniform lost their lives that day to save and rescue others and it reminded us how much we appreciate our own first responders.
On September 23rd we had our District Governor visit with DG Brady Connell. Our club partnered with Greater Van Nuys and the West Valley online club. Our Board met with Brady before the meeting to give him a brief overview of what we are doing. He was very impressed with the level of activity in our club.
The best part of the month was inducting 2 new members into our club and welcoming them into our Rotary family. At the first live meeting, we inducted Sharon Gerber and Kelly Gilmore was inducted at the District Governor’s visit. I can’t wait to see what they accomplish and get involved with in our club.
Our calendar is very full for October. There are many activities and projects planned, so please attend what you can and enjoy it all. Please help us work on our big fundraiser for November by buying tickets, helping us get items for our auction and inviting friends and neighbors to buy tickets.
Have a great October and remember it is End Polio Plus Month so make sure to get your contribution in to the RI Foundation.
Let’s Have Fun and Get it Done! And let’s get moving!!!
At the September 9 Lunch Meeting, the club presented the Protectors Awards to the officers and staff of the Topanga Community Police Station. This meaningful celebration was our chance to recognize the outstanding individuals who go above and beyond to serve, protect and keep our community safe each and every day. We came together to show our appreciation and gratitude for their dedication and heroism!
The club received an annual $10,000 donation from Pamela Porter in memory of her father, Clyde Porter, who was a longtime member of the club as well as a past president.
Sharon Gerber was inducted into the club on September 9. Congratulations! Photo l to r: Past President Sandy Rosenholz, Sharon Gerber, Past President Shelley Stark, and President Bryna Hornstein.
Camp Pendleton is home to over 70,000 Marines and 10,000 children under 5. More than 160 babies are born there each month. Most families arrive with only what fits in their car and often lack essentials for newborns and small children, plus furnishings for their housing. The Rotary Clubs of District 5280 are collecting new and gently used items for these families to select from at Camp Pendleton’s “Warrior Warehouse” and Fort MacArthur’s “Airman’s Attic”, which is filled with donated items that are free for local military families. Contact David Henseler with your donation.
